Why replace missing teeth?

Losing one or more of your teeth creates a gap in your smile, affects your ability to chew properly, and can alter your diet and nutrition. In addition to these serious issues, tooth loss also causes bone loss, adjacent teeth migrations, and chewing problems.

Tooth loss causes bone loss

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it shrinks from lack of stimulation. Not only does losing teeth affect your smile, it could even change the shape of your face causing you to look prematurely aged.

Why choose dental implants?

Crowns, bridges, and dentures address the short-term cosmetic problem of missing teeth but do nothing to stop bone loss. Crown & bridge dentistry requires grinding down healthy teeth leaving them at much greater risk for cavities and tooth failure.

Bridges do not stop bone loss. Dentures become uncomfortable and unstable over time as the jawbone shrinks causing eating and speech problems.

With dental implants, healthy teeth are not compromised. Dental implants, like natural teeth, stimulate the jaw and stop bone loss. Leading dental organizations recognize dental implants as the standard of care for tooth replacement (www.adi.org.uk).

what are dental implants?

During the last 40 years, the use of dental implants has changed dentistry beyond recognition. Dental implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They bond with healthy bone and provide permanent support for dental crowns and dentures. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime. A dental implant is a small root-shaped screw normally made from titanium or a titanium alloy. These screws are inserted in the area where a tooth has been

lost and they attach to the jawbone and gum tissue to become a stable base in a process that takes around 8-12 weeks during which the implant will settle and the bone will grow onto the implants to fuse it to it - osseointegration.

Are you a candidate?

Dental implants can be placed in most adults. Adolescents may be eligible once their facial structure has matured. Anyone with reasonable health can have a dental implant. Certain uncontrolled medical conditions may decrease implant treatment effectiveness. The main limitation is the amount of bone available. A comprehensive assessment will determine whether dental implants are the right option for you. If implants are appropriate, a full treatment plan would be developed together with an estimate of the costs of providing the treatment.

How long can implants last?

Implants can last many years if cared for properly. Many implants have been in place for more than 40 years.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

It mainly depends on upon the patient and the bone in which the implant is placed but in average, the success rate can be as high as 95 to 100%.

Do I need an implant for each missing tooth?

No, unless you are only having a single tooth replaced. As a general rule, we can “bridge” between implants. Normally, from 4 to 6 implants can be used to replace all the teeth in one jaw.

How long does it take to place dental implants?

A single implant may be placed in as little as 20 to 40 minutes, although depending on the location and the number of implants placed it will take longer.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost will vary depending on the degree and extent of treatment needed. At Wandsworth Dental Centre, we will ensure that you are fully aware of all the clinical steps and their associated costs before you commit to implant treatment .

The cost of an implant can appear high. However, implants will normally last considerably longer than any other treatment e.g. a bridge, will not harm any other tooth, will cost less to maintain over the life of the implant and will keep the bone.

In Britain the average cost of a restored implant is £2,000, however, you can take advantage

of our special prices or promotions in order to save a good money.
